PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments Version 2) is a generic project management methodology helping individuals and organizations to control the start, middle and end of a project.
The method is a structured approach to project management based on 7 best practice management Principles and comprising of 7 management Processes and Themes (knowledge areas). Importantly PRINCE2 encourages users to Tailor PRINCE2 for the project environment.
Initially developed in 1989 by the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) for the management of IT projects, the method was later enhanced and transformed to a generic project management model to be used by all UK government projects. This new version, known as version 2 was launched in 1996 and hence its title PRINCE2. In 2009 PRINCE2 underwent a ‘refresh’ with the aim of making it a more ‘user friendly’ method and to better align the method with more commonly used project management terminology.
Since 1996 the method has been adopted by government and private organizations across the world and fast becoming the ‘de facto’ standard for project management.
Let us answer this question by asking you…
If you answered yes to one of these questions then you will benefit from the use of PRINCE2.
The two certification levels are Foundation and Practitioner. Foundation certification demonstrates an understanding of how the method operates. The Practitioner certification demonstrates competency in applying and adapting the method to different project situations and scenarios.
Two different exams are offered for Foundation and Practitioner certification. The Foundation Exam is a one hour 75 question multiple choice exam. Candidates must obtain 35 or more correct responses to gain the Foundation qualification. Please note 5 of the 75 questions are trial questions which will not contribute to you mark. These 5 questions are randomly applied throughout the paper.
The Practitioner Exam is a 2.5 hour open book scenario based exam. The exam uses objective test questions. This means the candidate chooses a response to a question from a set of choices for which the correct answer is pre-determined.
The participant must provide responses to 8 questions presented in the following style.
The maximum score for the exam is 80 marks. The participant must acquire 44 (55%) or more marks to pass the exam.
Practitioners are required to be re-registered within 3-5 years of their original certification. This re-registration comprises a 1-hour examination set at the same standard as the Practitioner examination.
