What is the history of PRINCE2?

Initially developed in 1989 by the CCTA (Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency) for the management of IT projects, the method was later enhanced and transformed to a generic project management model to be used by all UK government projects. This new version, known as version 2 was launched in 1996 and hence its title PRINCE2. In 2009 PRINCE2 underwent a 'refresh' with the aim of making it a more 'user friendly' method and to better align the method with more commonly used project management terminology.

Since 1996 the method has been adopted by government and private organizations across the world and fast becoming the 'de facto' standard for project management.

How will PRINCE2 benefit me and my organization?

Let us answer this question by asking you...

  • Are changes planned in your organization?
  • Would a structured approach to managing these changes benefit you?
  • Is the start up, execution and closure of your projects managed differently for each project?
  • Are the responsibilities of people in your organization’s projects often unclear and not well understood?
  • Would you benefit from a tool that identifies how to involve stakeholders in a project?
  • Can the terminology used by parties involved in a project confuse stakeholders?
  • Would you benefit from using consistent terminology, processes and project documents across all your projects?
  • Would your organization benefit from adopting a standard that is viewed as best practice and training is independently certified by an international accreditation body?

If you answered yes to one of these questions then you will benefit from the use of PRINCE2.

What exams must I take to gain certification?

Two different exams are offered for Foundation and Practitioner certification. The Foundation Exam is a one hour 75 question multiple choice exam. Candidates must obtain 35 or more correct responses to gain the Foundation qualification. Please note 5 of the 75 questions are trial questions which will not contribute to you mark. These 5 questions are randomly applied throughout the paper.

The Practitioner Exam is a 2.5 hour open book scenario based exam. The exam uses objective test questions. This means the candidate chooses a response to a question from a set of choices for which the correct answer is pre-determined.

The participant must provide responses to 9 questions presented in the following style.

  • Classical multiple choice
  • Yes/No
  • Multiple response
  • Matching
  • Sequencing
  • Assertion/reason

The maximum score for the exam is 108 marks. The participant must acquire 60 (55%) or more marks to pass the exam.

Practitioner Re-registration

Practitioners are required to be re-registered within 3-5 years of their original certification. This re-registration comprises a 1-hour examination set at the same standard as the Practitioner examination.

Do you offer computer based training?

On occasions computer based training can be of value and more economical however we do not offer PRINCE2 computer based training as we don’t believe it can replace the value of interaction and learning gained from an experienced trainer, particularly for the development of project management skills. Classroom project management training will allow you to understand how the processes, components and techniques all come together and undoubtedly will allow you to apply the new skills and knowledge with greater confidence in the work environment.

Is PRINCE2 Public Domain?

There is no licence fees for you to use PRINCE2. However, PRINCE2™ is a Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce and only APMG accredited organizations are permitted to train and consult in the use of the method.

When selecting a PRINCE2 training provider always ensure the provider you have selected is licensed and accredited by the APM Group. Without this accreditation the training provider will be in breach of copyright, is unable to provide exams and without the accreditation the training delivery of the provider would have not been assessed against the high standards set by the accreditation body.
